The Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Selection Test (JNVST) for Class 9 is a Lateral Entry test designed to fill vacant seats in various JNVs. The level of the examination is based on the Class 8 NCERT curriculum. The test is conducted in an objective (OMR-based) format and lasts for 2.5 hours.

The Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Selection Test (JNVST) for Class 9 is conducted as a Lateral Entry Test to fill vacant seats in established Navodaya Vidyalayas. The examination is designed to test the proficiency of students in subjects taught up to Class 8.
Exam Stages and Tiers
The JNVST Class 9 admission process is straightforward and consists of a single competitive stage followed by verification:
- Written Examination: A one-phase OMR-based offline test conducted at the district level.
- Lateral Entry Selection: Selection is strictly based on the merit list against the number of vacant seats available in the specific JNV of that district.

The question paper is objective in nature and is provided in both English and Hindi. Each question carries equal weightage.

Time Duration
The total duration for the examination is 2 hours and 30 minutes (150 minutes). Additional time of 50 minutes is provided to "Divyang" (specially-abled) students as per government norms.
Selection Process Details
Selection for Class 9 Lateral Entry is highly competitive as seats are limited to the actual vacancies in each school.
- Eligibility: Only those candidates who are studying in Class 8 during the current academic session in government or government-recognized schools in the same district where the JNV is functioning are eligible.
- Qualifying Marks: Candidates must score minimum qualifying marks in each subject as per NVS guidelines.
- Merit List: A district-wise merit list is prepared. If there is a tie, NVS tie-breaking rules (usually based on age or specific subject marks) are applied.
- Medical & Document Verification: Provisional selection does not guarantee admission. Candidates must pass a medical exam and provide original certificates for birth, category (SC/ST/OBC), and rural/urban status.
